Why shrinking stablecoin supply isn't bearish this time
Contrary to previous trends, the three-month decline in stablecoin supply, from a mid-May peak of nearly $320 billion to approximately $307 billion (a 4% decrease), isn't signaling a bearish market. This contrasts sharply with the 26% collapse observed during the 17-month bear market of 2022-23. The recent drop is largely attributed to the GENIUS Act's prohibition on payment stablecoin yield, which has redirected dormant capital into tokenized Treasuries like BUIDL and USYC. These tokenized assets have seen remarkable growth, surging from $6.5 billion to nearly $16 billion within a year, with 56% of that growth occurring in the last six months alone. Concurrently, on-chain stablecoin transaction volume reached an unprecedented $1.8 trillion in June, marking a 63% increase in just one month. This indicates a fundamental shift where stablecoins are transitioning from being mere holding places to becoming active settlement layers, exemplified by Binance's $1.84 billion in USYC now serving as off-exchange collateral on the BNB Chain.
