Users behave differently in AI Overviews vs. AI Mode
AI Overviews transform Google into a comparison layer, while AI Mode leads to faster acceptance and fewer clicks. A study of 846,000 search sessions revealed that users on AIO pages reversed scroll direction 47.5% of the time, compared to 27% without AIOs, indicating more re-reading and comparison before making a decision. Brand searches also saw a decrease in speed and certainty, with navigational queries experiencing a 40% increase in cursor activity when an AIO appeared. This suggests that even for branded traffic, users now evaluate surrounding search engine results page (SERP) content before clicking. Brands should treat AI Mode and AI Overviews as distinct optimization challenges: AI Mode favors inclusion in AI-generated shortlists, whereas AIOs benefit from stronger SERP copy, title tags, and metadata that withstand repeated comparison.
