There Continue to Be Reasons for Software to Be Slow
Large Language Models (LLMs) can reduce the cost of implementing performance work, but implementation cost is often not the primary barrier to shipping optimizations. Teams may tolerate slower software, cut engineering budgets, deprioritize performance, or face higher costs related to testing, migration, correctness, and long-term maintenance. Additionally, AI-generated optimizations can overfit benchmarks or introduce reliability issues, meaning faster code generation doesn't necessarily lead to faster production software.
