SQL Query Order Can Break Applications: Test With Shuffled Data
The implicit reliance on row order in SQL queries can lead to subtle bugs and unreliable test suites, as database query results are not guaranteed to be in a specific order. To identify these issues, the authors suggest intentionally shuffling or reversing query outputs using database settings, framework configurations, or a custom PostgreSQL extension called pg_disorder. This testing method successfully uncovered order-dependent bugs and pagination problems in frameworks such as Rails, Django, and Gitea.
