TLDR Tech / Practical
Scaling Kubernetes Workloads with Node Swap
Kubernetes v1.34 has reached General Availability with support for node swap using cgroup v2 separate swap accounting, enabling operators to back node swap with fast NVMe solid-state drives. Benchmarks across Linux CI/CD kernel builds, headless Chrome browser sandboxes, and isolated Python runtimes demonstrate density improvements of up to 3× while incurring little or no latency cost under peak load. To achieve these gains, the authors recommend configuring kubelet with LimitedSwap and provisioning burstable QoS workloads.
