Revived pig kidneys stored frozen for a year
Researchers at the University of Minnesota have successfully restored function to pig kidneys that were preserved at -150 °C for over a year using a vitrification technique involving iron oxide nanoparticles. After transplantation into pigs or testing on perfusion systems, the kidneys regained their color and produced urine, although they still displayed signs of injury from the cryoprotective agents. The team aims to adapt this method for human organs to enhance organ preservation and transplantation processes.
