Red Hat Analyzes etcd Sharding for Hosted Kubernetes Control Planes
Red Hat has published an engineering analysis of the etcd sharding feature, currently in technical preview for hosted Kubernetes control planes. Tests involving four different workload types demonstrated that separating cluster state and event objects into distinct shards resulted in up to a 96% reduction in slow apply operations, faster compaction, and increased write throughput without negatively impacting user-perceived latency. However, sharding led to a 1.8x to 2.3x increase in etcd container memory consumption and introduced a compaction issue under heavy custom resource quota pressure.
