Quantum Resistance Roadmap for Ethereum
Vitalik Buterin has released a detailed roadmap for Ethereum's quantum resistance, covering four attack surfaces: consensus-layer BLS signatures, data availability, EOA signatures, and application-layer ZK proofs. Each area has specific cryptographic migration strategies. The primary challenge lies in the ZK layer, where quantum-resistant STARKs incur a ~10M gas cost compared to 300-500K for current SNARKs. The proposed solution involves protocol-layer recursive aggregation using EIP-8141 validation frames, potentially replacing large volumes of transaction signatures and proofs with a single STARK per block. The selection of Ethereum's long-term hash function (e.g., Poseidon2, Poseidon1, or BLAKE3) is still under consideration.
