PostgreSQL uuidv7 keys approach bigint speed, outperform uuidv4
A performance evaluation of PostgreSQL 18 shows that its new uuidv7 keys exhibit loading speeds comparable to bigint identity keys, with only a marginal difference. In contrast, uuidv4 keys require double the loading time and significantly increase write-ahead log (WAL) output. The study also highlights that existing tables using v4 keys can adopt uuidv7 for new entries without a complete data migration, leading to reduced index bloat and less WAL usage.
