PAM4 vs. PAM6 for 448G Copper Links in AI Networks
The networking industry is evaluating signal modulation techniques, particularly PAM4 and PAM6, to achieve 448 Gbps speeds over copper connections for AI server racks. Given that copper's effective range shrinks to one meter or less at 448 Gbps due to significant skin effect losses at high frequencies, engineers are considering PAM6 and QAM-32 encoding to reduce symbol rates and extend cable length.
