New Modular Quantum Error Correction Shows 10x Simulation Gains
A collaborative effort by researchers from Google Quantum AI, DeepMind, and MIT has yielded a novel modular design for quantum error correction. This approach builds high-rate quantum memories by connecting small, flat chip modules at their edges. Simulations at the circuit level demonstrated a tenfold improvement in the physical qubit-to-logical qubit ratio compared to a standard modularized surface code, even with imperfect connections between modules.
