Musttail Chains Outperform Other Dispatch Methods, GCC 14 Alters Computed Goto Behavior
An in-depth technical study compares the efficiency and compiler handling of different dispatch techniques for a FIX field scanner, including switch statements, computed gotos, and C++ musttail chains. The investigation determined that musttail chains provide an 11% to 19% performance boost over other dispatch structures, primarily due to small, self-contained functions that avoid stack overflow, not differences in branch prediction. Additionally, the research observed that GCC 14 now implicitly converts computed gotos into a single indirect jump, negating their previous effectiveness.
