Modal upgrades VM filesystem for faster performance
Modal has replaced virtio-fs with ImageFS-blk, a block-based filesystem, for its VM Sandboxes, improving performance. The company found virtio-fs inefficient for metadata-heavy operations. By allowing the guest kernel to manage its own ext4 filesystem via virtio-blk and implementing lazy data serving, Modal achieved faster cold starts and significant speed improvements in benchmarks.
