Materialize Shifts PostgreSQL Metadata to READ COMMITTED
Engineers at Materialize have updated their PostgreSQL metadata store, moving from SERIALIZABLE to READ COMMITTED isolation to boost write performance. They ensured a linearizable log by implementing a contiguity invariant, a shared truncation lock, and a marker row for initial writes, verifying the design with a Lean 4 model. This modification resolved metastable failures linked to SIRead locks and increased compare-and-set operations per second from 4,300 to over 13,000.
