Ledger received warnings about device tampering starting in 2025
Ledger is under examination for how it handled prior reports of hardware wallet tampering, with security experts revealing warnings that date back to December 2025. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès and researcher Joe Grand indicated that individuals had alerted Ledger to suspected malicious modifications months before an incident in October involving stolen cryptocurrency and altered devices. Ledger has confirmed the presence of unauthorized hardware within an affected unit but has not yet determined the total financial loss.
