Is .com/.eth the New Institutional Namespace Standard?
The passage of the GENIUS Act and ongoing OCC banking rulemaking are encouraging institutions to register paired .com/.eth domain identities, establishing a dual-rail namespace. DNS (.com) handles legally referenceable filings and regulated communications, while ENS (.eth) provides native smart-contract composability. This pairing resolves a structural incompatibility: .com domains have legal standing but cannot be directly called by on-chain contracts, whereas .eth names resolve in EVM environments but lack regulatory acceptance. This approach creates tension with Ethereum's decentralization principles, with critics arguing that compliance-driven ENS adoption could centralize the protocol as identity infrastructure controlled by regulated entities.
