IPv6 Deployment Lessons from Broadband Service
Based on seven years of operational experience supporting over one million broadband subscribers at WorldLink Communications, the author outlines the practical difficulties of implementing dual-stack IPv6 in an IPoE network. Significant challenges included customer premise equipment compatibility, DHCPv6 rebind issues, Layer 2 multicast configuration, and state management failures that impacted service. Recommendations include using /56 or /60 address delegations instead of single /64 prefixes, disabling DBOR for DHCPv6, and independently tracking IPv4 and IPv6 traffic metrics.
