Evaluating the Value of Harnesses for Coding Agents
An author compared the performance of coding agents tasked with building an API service, both with and without a behavioral harness. A top-tier model performed consistently well regardless of the harness, while a more budget-friendly model improved from a 30% success rate to a 100% success rate when using the harness. Although the harness increased token usage and runtime, the harnessed budget model delivered reliable results at a much lower average cost than the unharnessed top-tier model. The author suggests that behavioral harnesses function as executable checks that prevent requirement deviations during development.
