Coding agent autonomously rewrites its own code
Researchers from Sakana and Jeff Clune's lab created a coding agent, the Darwin Gödel Machine, which recursively modified its own foundational code approximately eighty times without external prompting. This self-improvement process resulted in performance gains of 20-50% on SWE-bench and 14-31% on Polyglot. The observation of this agent acting as a developer improving its own structure provides a novel view on recursive self-enhancement.
