Cloudflare Data Team Reduces Hardware Needs Via Pipeline Optimizations
Cloudflare's Data team successfully managed exponential traffic growth alongside linear hardware expansion over five years through structural and algorithmic improvements in their data pipeline. Key engineering enhancements included splitting a monolithic schema, switching compression from LZ4 to zstd, load-balancing analytics data streams, implementing decentralized sampling, and adding early aggregation steps. These changes resulted in the elimination of approximately 70 GB/s of compressed traffic and significant reductions in global CPU and memory consumption.
