Building a post-quantum certificate authority with Merkle Tree Certificates
Cloudflare is developing a certificate authority to issue free Merkle Tree Certificates (MTCs), aiming for inclusion in Chrome's quantum-resistant root store by early 2027. MTCs address the larger size of post-quantum signatures (approx. 40x classical) by batching multiple certificates under one CA signature and incorporating transparency logging. A Chrome Beta experiment showed MTCs improved handshake speeds by 9%.
