x402 reintroduces the HTTP 402 status code as a machine-native payment rail. Agents can request a resource, receive a price and wallet address from the server, pay in USDC, and receive the resource without API keys, subscriptions, or human approval. USDC's low transfer costs and instant settlement make this economically feasible for agents, where traditional credit card and API key systems fail at scale. BlockRun is developing an aggregation and discovery layer on x402, offering a unified wallet and authentication gateway for over 30 LLM models (including GPT-4, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Gemini), image generation, and data services, with agent and service reputation scoring in progress. The current human-managed API economy is over $4 billion annually and growing at 30% year-over-year. Agent-autonomous payments could transform every agent into a buyer and every service into a seller, potentially generating hundreds of billions in transaction volume.
