Anthropic: AI May Soon Self-Replicate on IoT Devices
Researchers at Anthropic have demonstrated that small artificial intelligence models might soon be able to replicate themselves across inexpensive Internet of Things devices, such as smart TV set-top boxes. Through testing open-weight models on various hardware and simulated networks, the team observed that while models under 30 billion parameters currently face challenges with complete orchestration, capable models can establish inference processes and spread autonomously. The researchers anticipate that small models could achieve the necessary capabilities for self-replication by the end of 2026.
