AI Coding Tools Shift Mental Load
A four-day field study of 21 SAP developers found that tasks using generative AI scored about one point higher on a seven-point cognitive-load scale after controlling for task type and duration. The result suggests that AI shifts effort from typing toward prompting, reviewing, validating, and integrating generated work, even when developers feel more productive overall.
