AI Assistant Memory: Retrieval Beats Full History in Cost-Effectiveness
An evaluation of four methods for imbuing AI assistants with memory revealed that a retrieval-based approach offered superior value compared to using the full conversation history. Tested across two models and over 1,200 runs with a simulated project manager scenario, retrieval memory proved more economical and effective, especially for tasks requiring accurate recall of past information. Utilizing the complete history was found to be substantially more expensive and less reliable.
