Agentic Commerce Is Taking Shape
Agentic commerce is developing with two primary payment systems: an enterprise stack (OpenAI's ACP with Stripe, Google's AP2 with partners like Mastercard and PayPal) for human-assisted purchases, and a crypto stack (Coinbase's x402 protocol) for agent-to-agent transactions. Coinbase's x402 protocol has processed over 50 million USDC transactions on Base and Solana, with volume doubling in February. Coinbase also introduced Agentic Wallets with native x402 support, while Virtuals Protocol's ACP further extends the crypto stack for agent-to-agent commerce using cryptographic Proof of Agreement and smart contract escrow. Crypto's advantage lies in settlement efficiency, with stablecoins clearing in seconds for minimal fees, contrasting with card rails' 2-3% fees and multi-day settlement. The market is expected to split, with enterprise rails handling human-to-merchant transactions and crypto dominating agent-to-agent commerce.
